Canadian helicopter skiing is known throughout the ski world as the greatest.
Our editors have gone heli- skiing, and they haven’t been the same since (its
the ear to ear grin). To heli ski or heli board in Canada, in British Columbia's Purcells, the Cariboos, the
Monashees, or the Bugaboos, with CMH, Mike Wiegele,
Bella Coola Heli Sports, or RK Heli is a must on every
skiers list. Heli ski trips are all-inclusive with luxury lodging in a mountain
cabin, gourmet meals and plenty of vertical powder skiing.
Cat skiing is on the
rise in the Canadian Rockies too.
There is something priceless about helicopter skiing (although it actually quite
pricey at $5,000-15,000 per person for a week). Flying in a private chopper to
remote untouched summits, being dropped off on a knife's edge peak with nothing
but snowfields and spectacular mountains surrounding you is amazing. As the
whirl of the helicopter blades and the rush of blowing snow settle, you hear the
helicopter sound dissipate, and you are left with solitude, peace and powder
awaiting your ski signature. Heli ski trips vary based on the location you
choose, the size of your ski group, and the level of skiers you are grouped
with. You pay more for an A Star Bell helicopter which holds only 4 or 5 skiers
plus a guide and pilot, but you get more private powder. If you are in
larger group sharing a big helicopter, you may spend time waiting for fellow
skiers, and waiting for your helicopter to return as they service another ski
group sharing the same pilot and chopper for the day.
No matter what heli ski company you travel with, the camaraderie and excusive
ski terrain is unmatched and should definitely be on your skiers bucket list.
Not only is the skiing amazing, returning to your heli ski lodge after a day of
deep powder and big vertical, you have luxury lodging, spa treatments, après ski
cocktails around a fire, and great stories during a gourmet meal at a grand
dining table with your new ski buddies. You go to bed dreaming of more untouched
snow, and pray for clear weather so you can fly again the next day.
