You
have heard of Big Sky, the beautiful ski resort in Montana. But have you ever
heard of Moonlight Basin? Few have, which is what makes this new ski resort such
a gem.
Moonlight Basin opened in 2003 with 8 lifts including a 6-person chairlift
accessing 1,900 acres of skiing. The resort features The Moonlight Lodge, a
fabulous log lodge and spa with cascading outdoor pool, and magnificent mountain
homes throughout the 39-square mile Montana resort.
Moonlight was started by two ranch hands, who knew a thing or two about building
luxury ski lodges and homes. Skiing at Moonlight feels like a private club, akin
to nearby Yellowstone Club – without the steep membership dues.
Families can rent beautiful ski in ski out homes at Moonlight, and ski
everything from groomed blues, and the Pony Express family area, to upper
mountain experts’ Lone Tree and Headwater terrain of chutes, glades and powder
filled bowls.
Lone Peak serves as a dramatic focal point during your ski day, rising 11,166’
like the Matterhorn in Zermatt Switzerland. If you wish to ski Lone Peak, just
buy the “Biggest Skiing in America” ticket to access
Big Sky for 5,512 acres of
interconnected terrain. That’s greater than Alta/Snowbird , Vail, and
approaching Whistler Blackcomb.
After skiing Moonlight Basin’s vast acreage of north facing protected snow, and
challenging yourself on the backside of Lone Peak, the Moonlight Spa awaits. The
décor of Moonlight lodge is rocky mountain elegant, with big horn sheep perched
on the huge stone fireplace, comfy leather couches and Montana artwork. Happy
Hour and dinner of Elk and Caribou at Timbers with a view of the slopes is the
ultimate après ski reward. We recommend you make a ski trip to Moonlight in
Montana.
