Our Lech Zurs Ski Review
Lech and Zurs are located in Vorarlberg region of Austria, just north of St
Anton. These two interconnected ski towns offer over 144 kilometers of prepared
trails served by 32 lifts. Skiers in this region can ski between 4 villages
including Lech, Zurs plus Zug and Oberlech. When you ski Lech Zurs, your Ski
Arlberg ticket includes a total of 84 lifts. A short bus ride from Zurs to
Stuben and you can also ski to nearby St Anton and St Christoph. Plus the
Sonnenkopf ski terrain is included giving skiers access to 283 kilometers of
prepared trails plus thousands of acres of off piste skiing.
Lech is known as the birthplace of skiing dating all the way back to 1901 and
the founding of the Ski Club Arlberg. The village valley of Lech offers many
beautiful Austrian chalets for lodging, with views of the surrounding slopes in
all directions.
Skiing at Lech Zurs is vast and one of the best ways to ski it is to ski the
famous "The White Ring," or Der Weisse Ring, named for a race every January when
1,000 skiers race 22 kilometers descending 5,500 meters of altitude. It is the
longest ski race in the world. We enjoyed skiing The White Ring at a more
leisure pace starting with a long tram ride up the Rufikopf. A pleasant ski over
to the Schuttboden T-bar down to the Hexenboden chairlift, from which we skied
down to the village of Zurs featuring 8 chairs and trams. We loved skiing the
extensive high alpine terrain of Zurs with everything from groomed (prepared)
cruisers to steep, challenging shoots off the Trittkopf tram, stopping at the
delightful Flexenhausl for a wonderful Austrian lunch of sausage, cheese and
spatzle, just off Trail 10, Muggengrat-Tali.
From the 8,000’ summit of Madloch-Joch, we skied a long enjoyable descent to the
Village of Zug, where we loaded a double chair and dined at the mountain top
Balmalp with more stunning views, a big party deck and a modern interior décor.
We skied to the 8 passenger Steinmahder bubble chair with heated leather seats
for several long runs off Zuger Hochlicht before we skied down the east side of
the mountain to the main base of Lech Oberlech which features extensive terrain
serviced by 11 more lifts. Many people ski just this area of Lech and miss the
incredible Zurs experience which you complete by following The White Ring. Lech
Zurs has five different peaks over 8,000-feet. Lech Zurs hopes to someday
connect their terrain with nearby Wart via gondola to increase their already
vast terrain exponentially.
Lech is a delightfully romantic ski town, with upscale shops, great après ski
bars along the scenic river that runs through town, and lovely Austrian four
star hotels like der Berghof
located right next to the Schlegekopf lift.
Oberlech is a charming upper mountain car-free village, accessed by the Oberlech
tram with several chalets, restaurants, and après ski if you wish to stop for a
drink before skiing down the mountain. If you are looking for a romantic ski
vacation, Oberlech may be the place to stay tucked high on the hillside away
from cars, traffic and civilization.
